Yes, it is sad to see it just rusting away here on the Delaware River. As you come out of IKEA, the ship just looms across the street where it is moored.No signs, no tours, nothing. It has great lines.

It was brought to Philadelphia while I was in graduate school, alarmingly long ago. Last week I looked around a little and didn't see it and assumed it had been scrapped. Just a matter of time now, I guess.

I attended Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ, from 1954 to 1958. There was a high bluff on campus that overlooked the Hudson River directly across from mid-town Manhattan. Watching the S.S. United States maneuver into or out of its NYC pier right across the river was truly impressive and always drew a crown of engineering students who probably should have been in class or studying. And I also remember watching the revolving light on top of the Empire State Building at night and timing its rotation. As I recall, it was 60 seconds but that seems a little slow as I think about it now. But they say life was much slower back then.

Just north of the Walt Whitman Bridge, directly opposite the IKEA store on Front St. It is a sad sight to see such beautiful lines on such a forlorn ship.

There was a terrific documentary on PBS a view years ago. Several stabs have been made at saving the ship. Hopefully it happens before it disappears.
