How does a guy with all that graduate school debt and no prospect for a living-wage-job take a vacation?

Missouri -- where in Minnesota did you decide to go? You were going to go camping, right?

We usually don't take vacations in the summer (no kids yet, so we have that luxury).

We usually visit my wife's family in Minnesota for a few days, but that's about it. We take our actual trips in the fall or winter. Less crowded, cheaper, and not hot.

We are moving this summer, so that will probably take up most of our vacation time (and money) for this year, so probably no "big trip" this year. But, one of the exciting things about moving is that there's a whole new set of stuff within a couple hours' drive!

We have lots of flexibility, so we have lots of options. It's down to a very short list right now.

We're going to "the Lake" as Minnesotan's say it. (For others it means to go to a small home on one of the thousands of lakes in Minnesota.) We fish, listen to loons, get bitten by mosquitoes and stuff like that. Mostly we cut grass and repair stuff. Sounds like fun right. Someone said they were going to Banning. I think he means Banning Junction which is in the middle (north and south) of the state and on the east side (east and west) on interstate highway 35. A very small town, but typical of the area.

If done the old school way with tarps, sleeping bags and Coleman stoves, camping is pretty cheap thrills. You gotta eat so that is kind of a wash and it can be relaxing. The modern way with RVs or fancy Goretex tents is too expensive for me and I have a job.

We didn't camp when I was a kid. My Dad grew up way out in the sticks of Southeastern Washington State and, as he said, "Why would I want to 'rough it' camping? I went to college so I didn't have to live that way any more".

Huh, my father grew up in the Tri-Cities, starting with a quonset hut provided for the family at Hanford during WWII - and he was a nut for camping. The Palouse / Blue area would do that to anyone, I'd have thought.

Blue Mtns, (Anatone) NE Oregon (Wallowa Valley- Flora). I guess he never quite developed a taste for being dirty and packing water. His mother (also his teacher) took the kids to WSC when they were juniors and he saw the pharmacy school and said, "That's for me!" He only returned to visit my grandparents a couple of times a year. It was a long drive in those pre-interstate days.

More camping room for those who like it, I suppose...
