Snope has a long track record of correctly debunking internet rumors.LV wrote: There are a lot of "IF"s and "PERHAPS"s in the links you Googled. Not really info or scholarly research.
They linked the ISPN site, which is new to me. They did confirm the most incredible part (to me anyway), they poem in Eddie's pocket.
And often have a great moral, even if facts are played loosely. In the above case, the fact that the O'hare the airport is named for was a Medal Of Honor winner, and the son of a member of Capone's gang is enough. The embelishments, make a great moral story, but detracts from the truth. Is the fact that a mobster's son won the Medal of Honor, and saved many lives not enough? Do we really need the supposition about a guy trying to come clean? And is the poem in the pocket as signifigant as the story makes it, or just a coincidince?
