Civil War players going to Gettysburg in July?

Hi, All,
I got to wondering: how many of us here on this board are going to be participating in some way in the 150th celebration in Gettysburg this July?
I am going out for just July 5 to participate in the battle of the bands in front of the Dobbins House [North] and in a dedication ceremony for the field hospital set up in the days after the battles [over 19,000 patients, said to be the largest ever such facility]. Our whole band will not be there, just a half-dozen or so.
I wonder if there were a way to meet other Tubenetters? That would be interesting, to me at least, to meet others of similar interests musically.
How about in November for Remembrance Day? Anyone going to that big day? :D
Regards,
Scottw

PS. Gettysburg should be wild this July 1-5 and I envy Wade playing at Vicksburg--very neat stuff!

But if I ever do lose enough I will purchase (or build) an OTS Eb bass and a uniform and start playing with *someone*... (I think there is a band in Mississippi, but am not sure.)
I hope your experience is great and that you have a fun time out there. If you can get out this way by Saturday and come to our little party please come say hello. I can guarantee libations afterwards!
I wouldn't really worry about your waistline, Wade. Not as far as playing in a Civil War band: we are not a particularly svelte bunch, by and LARGE. Just enjoy it. It is a different type playing altogether, unlike anything else I have played. The music is quite different, the horns are mellow and small compared to today's instruments, and the style is also very different, too. Then there is the sense of history at these momentous events we play. You really do form a sense of empathy with the guys who went before, and that's not being corny. Just do it.

Between the straight re-enactors and us music guys, it should be an experience we will never again have in our lifetime. Same for Remembrance Day in November: a different kind of day, but never will it be duplicated.
Yes, it should be fun!

Scott, I will look into the band thing this Summer... :D
Good for you! No one I know gets rich off of this type playing, but anyone with even a slight sense of history almost has to enjoy it. If you can play for a Southern band, you will even get to wear cotton uniforms! Beats the Union woolies hands down. Enjoy!

Here is the link for July 5, Gettysburg. This "BOB" will take place 7pm after the battle re-enactment activity is over for the day.
I was interested to see where all the musicians hail from. Many of them are from California, as well as throughout the East, South, and Midwest.

I wish I could borrow a period horn. I have access to a uniform and only live 2 hours away.

I recently got a 1865 Slater-NY Eb bass saxhorn. After several attempts to fix the lead-pipe angle and the "farty-sounding" low Eb, I think we are good to go with this last visit to the repair shop. It sounds terrific. Actually, the repairman was absolutely blown away by the rotors: They were tighter and operated better than any NEW horn he has seen in his 50 years in the business! :D

Thanks! It also weighs next-to-nothing, for which my back is thankful.
