What would be a good box to use without driving the shipping costs sky high? Most wardrobe boxes only give an inch or two of space between the bell (19") and the box (crunch!)

That should work OK if you go Greyhound!
Deadly for FEDEX, UPS, USPS, or any of the other popular shippers unless to put the box on a wooden skid.

Thanks, guys! Found a massive (38"x38"x6') fridge box locally that I'm gonna try to hack down to fit.

The nice thing about 'going Greyhound' is their size limits are 30" x 48" x 84". The shipping costs are low enough that oversize doesn't mean much. If you are skeptical about packing the horn... there's no need to skimp on size.

I have had good results with Greyhound. I think it is because they do not use conveyor belts or rollers. Instead, they carry the box out and put it on the bus by hand.
Rollers are especially hard on cases that have the bell compartment extend out from the side of the case, because that part bumps on every roller.

Thanks for the replies, everyone! For now, I've decided to keep the buescher, as it plays relatively in tune (w-i-d-e slots) and makes the most gorgeous, distinct sound. Maybe find a marzan/b&m with a wrecked bell or a compatible buescher bbb... That would make a GREAT sounding CC!
