Hey everyone. So long story short, I just fell for an online scam. I paid a sum of money though a bank transfer and found out it was a scam the day after it was cleared. I've already filed a police report and a bank claim. I've also contacted the scammers bank to notify them about whats going on. I just want to see if anyone here has any experiences they can share with me and/or any suggestions to help me get that money back. What are my chances of getting that money back? At least partially? Thanks

I too fell for a scam years ago. The only way we were able to get any money back was to file a claim with our insurance company as a theft. I lost $1900 in the initial scam and our insurance paid us back $1000. Although not in any way related to the scam, we also had $600 in student aid come through later than all the rest, so we only ended up being out $300. Sorry, it sucks, but the insurance was the only way we were able to get anything back. The bank tried to recall the transfer, but it was long gone the moment it went through, I'm sure.

Best of luck!

Sorry I don't have any suggestions but if you don't mind I would like to know how it happened. There is always some new angle to watch out for.

I consider myself pretty resistant to these things but I almost fell for one recently. I was expecting an important UPS delivery and on the day it was supposed to arrive I received a very credible looking email from "UPS" advising me to click on a link concerning a delivery problem. I had no reason to suspect anything since my mental state was primed to fall into this trap. Of course the sender didn't know anything about me or the package but if you send out enough of these things the circumstances will fit some people perfectly and I happened to be one of them.

Good luck to you.

I also considered myself to be very resistant to these kinds of things. I just moved up to the Boston area for grad school and I was apartment searching. I found an ad on craigslist and the person got back to me and we talked for about 2 weeks. Heres where the red flag in my head should've popped up but due to the excitement of moving and honestly, inexperience, I didn't catch it. The lady said she needed to leave the country and would send me the keys to the apartment once I transferred her the money for the first month and a deposit. I should have seen it coming. Thankfully I realized this was a scam after looking up the address and finding this link.

The email that I got initially was identical to the very last one on the link. When I saw that, thats when my heart dropped. Unfortunately for me though, the transfer had been completed that same day so I couldn't just cancel it. I've learned my lesson the hard way and hopefully this post will prevent someone from falling into the same trap I did. Police reports and Bank investigations are in progress and I also notified IC3. Hopefully I can get that money back somehow or at least partially since I notified these agencies very close to the date. All I can do right now is just keep living and learn from this experience.
