Chicago has 2.7 million people whereas Memphis has around 655 thousand people. Per 100,000 people the homicide rate in Chicago is around 18 versus 20 for Memphis

How many of the 16/17 FT orchestra cities are on this list?

Chicago sounds a lot like Baltimore in that way. The other problem about Chicago is that nationally, there isn't much else that puts it in the news (apart from that awesome teacher's strike). I have family there, and know that it's actually a good place to live. Anyway, I might end up in Chicago for grad school next year, I do like the city. Just not looking forward to another high tax, high crime city. At least I will be able to move if I don't like it. Can't say as much for the people in the south side.

Both cities are close to state borders. Chicago is a short drive from Indiana, which has much looser gun laws.
There are many ways to get from New York City to New Jersey; use one of them to go get a gun in Jersey.
And, they can get them legally there.
Keep in mind that the Navy Yard shooter legally bought a shotgun, despite red flags in his background, including psychological and violence issues.

That's kind of my point -- the cities with the most restrictive gun laws have politicians who shout loudly about how much it promotes safety when they restrict the guns... whereas the reality is that the guns are only slightly less difficult to get for law abiding people, and probably just as easy to get for the non-law abiding people.

I gotta say though, it kind of freaks me out when I'm out west or down south and see folks with gun racks in their trucks or packing a sidearm with a CCP. Different world out there.

Yes, that is an issue. Essentially, the only way it will work is if something is done nationally, which I know won't happen, due to political lobbying.
