In June... three of us railed from Centralia, Il to Milwaukee for a German Sangerfest. Amtrak made me buy an extra seat for our group's three Alphorns because they were considered too large to be considered carry-on luggage. All was well going to Milwaukee and our Alphorns rode just fine in the purchased seat. However... on the return trip, our horns got 'booted' out of their seat and were forced to ride in the overhead because of excessive passenger loading. The conductor advised that the return ticket would be refunded since it had not been scanned. No refund was issued and I'm wondering why I was forced to buy the additional seat in the first place if it would have been OK to just let the Alphorns travel in the overhead.

At this point... Amtrak extorted money from me for an additional seat and lied about granting a refund.

Any other 'interesting' Amtrak experiences?

Sounds like Amtrak aspires to become an airline.
