I need to make a correction here. I have a Zoom H2N. It is different from a Zoom H2.
I could really use some good advice on choosing the settings on my ZOOM H2. I use it strictly to record my concert band in a concert hall . I don't think I've gotten as good a quality recordings as this recorder is capable of . You hear how they usually turn out here on my bands ACID PLANET page : http://www.acidplanet.com/artist.asp?songs=724692&T=560" target="_blank" .
I have tried different settings and am still not happy with the results. This building is an old, restored movie theater and I usually put the recorder in one of the windows in the back of the theater where the projectors would normally be. always get audience noise. This year I going to put it on the floor directly behind the conductor and the audience and only use the front mic.s to eliminate all of that.
Any good advice on how to set the rest of the inputs ?

Somewhere along the line with all the updates to FireFox, I can no longer play any Acid Planet recordings... my own or anyone else's. Not sure why.

Private message me your address. I'll send you a CD of which ever ones you want to hear. Some where along the line with all the updates to FireFox, I can no longer play any Acid Planet recordings... my own or anyone else's. Not sure why
typical tubenet response from an ignoramus who has never used the specific product
Even the ignoramus gets it right some times. Yes. I've been through the horrors of the gain being too high. Hopefully I have that part figured out . Thanks for your help all the same.

The H2 is very user friendly. It has inputs for stereo. It can even use powered mics. The results are really quite good for the price, even with the built in mics. I was quite frankly amazed with mine.
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

Just watch the gain and make sure the levels don't go too high in the louds (I choose to set my levels). The H2 works very well- make sure you have a good SD card as load time can vary.
I still have my DAT recorder and a very nice stereo mic along with my mini disc recorder but choose to use the H2 for ease of use and sound quality. I have not tried the H4N but I hear it is quite good.
The onboard mics work great wether using it to record a practice session/lesson or a concert.
Here is a link to the owners manual and how to adjust the settings:

Re: Best setting for my Zoom H2
Dear Mr. Bloke,
First all let me correct something. This is a a Zoom H2n. It is different from a Zoom H2.
Yes, this can use external mic.s. You even run them through a portable mixer first and just use the unit like strictly as the recording device and not use the internal mic.s at all. I have read about how that works really well. Buying really good mic.s and all the mic stands and cords is not in the budget. Not having to have other equipment is why I bought this in the first place. The price on these have gone down a lot since I bought mine 2 years ago. I paid almost $300 then and that was the best price going.
I believe this unit is capable all by itself to give me the recordings I want.

I used a H2 a few times and found it decent; cannot comment on the H2n except to suppose it to be similar. Sound like you've experimented with microphone location which is a big factor. Every situation is different, but generally closer is better for recording. A good starting point is a few feet behind and above the conductor. You can screw several microphone stand booms together to get altitude.
