I had a 74 chevy shortbed 1/2 ton, and had to swap out the transmission several times, T/H 350 to a T/H 400 and back. 454 engine replaced a small block 400.
With either engine/tranny combo, I was able to pull and replace the tranny in under a 1/2 hour, no manifolds in the way.
Joe, if you find a good shop/shadetree mechanic, you might want to spend a little more money and put in a T/H700r
4spd/overdrive, need to change output shaft-yoke and change driveshaft length.Or maybe that could happen later.
Good luck,

The 1974 truck was purchased with a cracked block 350, swapped in a smb400, but used 350 heads. Ran for 2 years, blew a head gasket(no steam holes in heads) I was already rebuilding the BB454/TH400 just moved up the timetable by 2 months.(454/TH400 was a freebie, as was the smb400 short block)
Newer truck(?) 1985 k2500 suburban 6.2 diesel TH/700 removed trans for rebuild, transfer case added an extra hour to job.
