question about laptop-to-laptop usb upload/download

That's what I do, the jump drive thing. If you have more than a jump drive can hold you can use an external hard drive like you use for backups. I used to use a male male cat5 cable but truthfully it was waaaaaaaaaaaaaay slow.

USB drives are the "floppy disks of the 10s" I'm sure people remember good old sneakernet- disk in one machine, walk over, put it in another machine and copy it.

I'm still not comfortable putting my 'stuff' on someone else's 'free' service. Possession is 9/10ths of the law.... But, again, there are black helicopters flying around my house...

Not USB to USB, but you can hook an ethernet cable between two machines. Most modern computers will autodetect whether the cable is a crossover cable or a standard and will adjust the ports automatically. Or you can connect two machines to the same router, switch, or hub with ethernet. Then you turn on file sharing and transfer away.

That's tbn.al's male to male cat5 cable, I believe. (I suppose really they're all male to male, but for this application you want a different cross-over wiring than you use with a hub or router.) I guess I don't doubt that it's slower than reading a USB drive, but does that add up the time spent on both ends?

...and yeah...I'm not comfortable with putting *my* $h!t up in someone *else's* "cloud".

I'm SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING loading NO FILES into my new computer, ONLY using it for browsing the internet, and ONLY accessing files via my computer (via EXTERNAL devices) when I'm OFFLINE. A longtime (40 years) friend (who is in the computer security business) does this with HIS computer. I believe he also takes several other additional precautions (such as not posting a jillion posts on tubenet, etc.)

If you follow through on your plan, you might fine one of these useful. More expensive than the cable option, but still a pretty good bang-for-the-buck.

Joe — here's another useful device, called a "Wormhole Switch." With it you can connect 2 computers, connect it, follow some easy setup instructions, then simple drag files or folders from one computer to another, as if it was one big screen Works with Mac or Windows. I've used mine several times, and it works. (I like gadgets.) Actually though, probably easiest thing is to download to a thumb drive, pop it into the other computer and upload it. Quick & easy.
