Is This Really Widespread?

In the light of the recent revelations at Florida A&M and OSU I am wondering how widespread this hazing activity really is. I realize I am an old fart, but I don't remember any of this crap from HS or College. If it is everywhere, more or less, how did we get to this point. Or maybe the question should be, "How to we turn it around?"

If I can inflict pain without leaving any obvious injury, is it funny?

Not the topic at all, but it did get me to thinking. When I was in school only the frat rats did this sort of stuff. The athletic teams, bands, chorus, cheerleaders, ROTC jocks were all too busy trying to perform well enough to get noticed that we didn't have time for any of this crap and laughed at the frat rats who did. I did a bit of research and found some startling statistics that I didn't want to believe. So I thought I would check with my tuba buddies to get "the rest of the story".

Yes there was hazing when I was a "crabbed" the band back in the day. So to answer the question: Yes it is widespread. In most cases (mine included) it is mild, as in the OSU case, and no one ever hears about it. As we used to say: Band is the largest fraternity on campus.
