The particular restaurants (dives?) come and go, but there always seem to be one or two places where you can get a beer tray loaded with crawfish or crab at prices a student can afford. And they're always across the river.
Back when rocks were still cooling during my time in the LSU band I seem to remember the favored place being called Earl's. Shrimp was cheaper than beef or even pork in those days.
