Yes, as classical musicans we play alot of classical. With Jazz, and a few rock songs re wrote for our ionsterment thats about it for us. So my question is, what type of music do you people at TubaNet listion to?

I got a bro into rock. I like classic country. Like the statler brothers. I do like queen and Ramstein's "Were all liveing in Amerika" is a funny music video.

In developing a course in Rock Music history, I have really begun to understand and love listening to old gospel groups such as the Soul Stirrers. I'm neither black nor a christian, but the music sure seems to speak to me. Really great singing crosses many boundries.

Pretty eclectic ... anything from Gregorian chant on up. There's good and bad in every era and every style, of course. Particularly fond of Renaissance and Baroque (figures, doesn't it -- no tubas then -- being able to transpose and read different clefs sure helps).

I listen to a lot of rock and country. I know, there really arent many music majors that listen to country, but what can I say.

mostly jazz, especially big band like buddy rich, stan kenton, count basie, duke ellingotn or Gordon Goodwin's big phat band.

Also just about any kind of instrumental music, classical, band music, brass quintets, etc

About the only genre in which I've not found some good is rap(this is MY preferences, alright? I know a lot of you disagree, and that's ok ). My top ten or so would have to include Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Peggy Lee, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Sara Vaughn(sp?), Ella, Ray Charles (I know, EVERYone likes him these days...), Satchmo, Alison Krauss, Patsy Kline, Willie Nelson, Chicago, The Eagles, Eric Clapton -- I'll smack my forehead later when I realize I've left off one of my favorites, but if I had to take a long trip with only these in my CD case I'd be JUUUUUST FINE!

Are you familiar with the Slovenian style of polka done in the USA? Frankie Yankovic was arguably the father of this genre. Lots of fun.

I've always liked Alison Krauss; but I recently rented The Chieftans video Down the Old Plank Road and her singing on the Irish folk song, Molly Ban, is absolutely incredible.

What, no southern rock? 38 special, Allman Brothers, or Skynyrd .
Dissapointed Hank's (Sr.) not on your list, but the rest are a damn good start.

I cannot listen to the new stuff. Back in the 80's there was some stuff that wasn't too bad.
Sirus has an Old School rap channel that plays some decent stuff.

Now there's a statement I can agree with(or at least with what Ralph is trying to say). It is truly amazing to me that there are people who can be sold just about anything. Don't get me wrong. Music is something where there will be vastly varying tastes. I concede this. However, in today's societ, I believe we have to acknowledge that much of the music being sold is nothing more than musical baby food. "Composers" often use a five second idea and extend this to make a five minute piece through use of repetition. I simply don't understand it. Not all of this is rap, either.

I will say there are a few(I wish to emphasize the word "few") rap songs which are both creative and interesting. Some don't even advocate beating up women and killing cops. In fact, some even use Christian lyrics(Should they be called lyrics? I don't know.).

I often question why the seeming majority of music played on the radio is such trash. There are so many great pieces of music which have been written and performed. These days, it seems that the best music is seldom heard on the radio or plays to sold-out audiences.

What kind of polkas and what instrumentation?

If yer playin' the bass line, you don't need no stinkin' charts--the changes are mostly of the I, V, IV variety (like Bluegrass). Come to think of it, I've got a strong suspicion that polkas are just ethnic bluegrass...
