Norman Pickering

Norman Pickerking, who audiophiles know as the inventor of a stylus and cartridge that brought LP's into the realm of high fidelity, died at 99 on Nov. 18.
His obit in the Times had quite a bit more information of which I was unaware. Besides his numerous inventions, he was a musician. He started as a violinist, but when he injured his right hand he switched to french horn and was good enough to land a job with the Indianapolis Symphony. Later he went to work for C.G. Conn and designed a horn that, as the Times put it, "has been in wide professional use."
His other projects included vibration control designs for Boeing 707s and 747s, and an ophthalmological ultrasound method for identifying eye ailments.
