Good luck out there (and farther east). My folks are supposed to get over a foot of snow. When I lived out there, I always thought "if it's going to be cold, it might as well snow."

Meanwhile, I'll be enjoying temperatures 40 degrees warmer than last week. (+30F, instead of -10F).

1.5 inches of snow causes 3hr "rush hour" delay in DC yesterday.

BLIZZARD warning tomorrow, 1.5 feet of snow predicted.

I'm 'hiding out' in Gainesville, FL tonight. Hoping that all the crap passes to the East by evening on Friday. I may just fart around here for an extra day to make sure. Any tuba gigs in Gainesville?

In Chicago I'm always happy to see snow cause that means it will be warming up considerably.

In all seriousness, my area has legitimately received 7-8 inches and it will not break 31 tomorrow. Some Interstates have been gridlocked all day; police are inundated and only responding to injury calls, not property calls. No motorcycle riding for the next couple days (now a trike or sidecar would be another story...)

I'm in Alexander City, Alabama for the night. The locals are freaking out here because there are a few flurries. Judging from the weather radar... my route through Huntsville, Nashville, and through Kentucky to Evansville, Indiana should be clear by mid-morning.

I gave some thought to running by and taking a look at your 'new stuff'. However... I've already informed my brass band that I would be home to take part in 'Brass Day' at the University of Evansville on Sunday.

Nashville reported thundersnow during the day Friday with a storm total of 8 inches.
I have no idea what thundersnow is, but I used a regular garden shovel to clear out the sidewalk, driveway, and apron yesterday evening. It has continued to snow lightly and everything is completely covered up again! Time to try and buy a real snow shovel, something I haven't owned in many years.
It seems that we were stuck in a band of heavy snow and ice all day yesterday. Chattanooga and Knoxville didn't seem to get much with Murfreesboro being around the eastern borderline of the snow/rain line. I guess Joe must have been well on the western side of the band.

Yes, Joe, your part of TN didn't get much. The whole state was not like that. I just took this in my backyard, past any drifts (visible on the right) and after the snow had nearly a day in the sun to settle down and compress - still about 6"

I just finished a nice drive from Newburgh, Indiana to Key West and back... driving through Nashville via 65 North and 24 West around 2pm Saturday. The Interstates were perfectly clear and there was next to no traffic through Nashville. It took a while for me to figure out why there was no traffic. The poor bastards living there were still digging out of their driveways!

They predicted 20-30 inches for our area. We got 40. Once I get dug out away from the house, I might discover that what I'm seeing is drift depth, but it's up to the window sills on the cars even there. Dulles officially got 28", though the weather service measured 38" in Ashburn, about ten miles from Dulles.

So, no evidence of over-prediction here, at least not this time.

Yes.

At one foot, the snowblower works.

At two feet, call the local guy with a plow on his pickup truck.

At three feet, spend four days with the front loader on the tractor--if you can get it to start.

At four feet, hope the power doesn't go out, because you'll be there for a couple of weeks at least.

It matters when you have to shovel it. 18-22" at my house in Baltimore. About an hour northeast of here they got 32".

Their kids were at home because the schools were closed, but federal workers (at least those at the professional level) who are at home during a weather event are generally expected to work at home, and there are various tools making that possible. Most people I know in the private sector are also working at home.

The House canceled all business for this week because of the snowstorm, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Sunday as the disruption of official Washington business looked to continue for some time.

The State Department has blamed the storm for delays in finishing the release of former Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton’s emails. The final batch is due at the end of this week, but on Friday, before the full fury of the storm was realized, the department asked a federal judge for a month’s delay.
