This happens now that I have learned to ignore one or two cold noses in my face ... and the licking.

I have a wife who performs the same function as your cats.

In addition to 3 golden retrievers (great sleepers), we have a 16 pound cat who delights in scratching at the door (not to come in or be fed; just to get attention) at around 4 AM and then about an hour before dawn. My wife's a sound sleeper; she's slept through an earthquake (honest!!). So it's me with the red-rimmed eyes in the morning.

That stupid cat is 14, so maybe the problem will take care of itself in a few years...

Do you mean she stands outside the bedroom door and yowls?

Decades ago when I had a dog, sometimes I would wake up to a wet back nose right in my face, and a humming noise. That dog would rest her muzzle on the bed and hum at me to get me up. Better than being jumped on or howled at....sort of.

About 15 years ago I had two cats who were getting rambunctious during the night, playing "Race Car" across me when I was asleep. I responded by shutting the bedroom door; they responded by putting paws underneath it and going Rattle Rattle during the night; I responded by putting a hair dryer just outside the door and plugging it in on the first Rattle. Took only two instances of that and I was able to sleep through the night. Now, when current cat pepper starts in on her mewing routine outside the bedroom door....I just sneak up to it and go BAM on it and that takes care of the problem for a while.
