I have been using IE, Windows 10 and I am just inundated with websites freezing up and I get the message that such and such a site is not responding. I then have to recover the website--if possible--or I have to go to task manager and get out of the browser completely. I am really getting tired of this! Is there anything better? I don't want to get into a big tech thing, though, just a safe, reliable browser. I don't play games or watch movies or download the latest and greatest videos. I just want to browse without constant delays.

But yeah, sounds more like your computer is junked up with a bunch of stuff.

I use these programs to help clear the junk:
* CCleaner
* Malwarebytes

Just be aware that when you buy malwarebytes that you are put on automatic renewal through paypal. I was astonished to find a charge on my credit card about six months after I was no longer using the computer it had been installed on. Protest did get the charge removed, but to me this is VERY bad business practice.
On my mac, Safari got so bonged up that I was having similar problems. I installed Opera and have been problem free as far as I can tell in the few weeks since I installed it. I would have re-installed Safari but cannot find my software disks. Opera is working as well for me as anything else has. Neither Chrome nor Firefox would install all the way, so that is why I went looking.

Overall, I think the browsers are all about the same, just depends which look and feel you prefer.

Microsoft really hasn't kept up with the times with IE. I use Safari with OS X. I have a new but low end Windows 10 laptop and use Firefox on that. I moved away from Microsoft Edge (which I think is what they call IE today) because I had to buy into the entire "Microsoft Experience".

I haven't used Chrome on either platform but use it on an Android tablet because it is what came on not and it hasn't annoyed me.

I haven't tried Opera in years so haven't used the latest versions.

My ISP recommended Sophos for the malware/virus software because they use the professional version on their servers. The home version is free. It comes in both OS X and PC versions.

Thanks all for the input. I should have mentioned that I regularly run Malwarebytes [clean] and keep the Norton [pretty good version from Comcast] up to date as well. I don't clog stuff up with either movies, videos or games. I use my computer for e-mail, browsing music and sports sites, and my music writing stuff.
I too did not choose to run that MS Edge that comes with Windows 10. This problem started shortly after the big update from Windows 10, though, now that I think about it. Any idea what they dumped into my machine?

I have IE 10 and don't really like it but, it seems microsoft wants only it now. A real pain has been the auto 'updates', full new versiions. These leave several gig of rubbish behind. Edge isn't so bad - it is probably better than IE as at least security seems to be kept up. Problem is keeping the hard drive cleaned up.

i have the paid version of Malwarebytes plus Cclean pro which includes a good defrag program. I run m'bytes and Ccleaner at least once a week and trend micro anti virus more often. after a MS update I run both, then check fragmentation and if it is over 2 or 3 % run defrag and then CClean again. Set CClean in advanced to clean up old windows application and overwrite at X3. It makes a BIG diffrence.

Yes, thanks for reminding me: I also run Trend Micro at least weekly. With all I do to keep out viruses, I doubt that my problem is that. There is just something about the browser that slows everything down.

Right now, it appears to be 483MB. That seems about average if I recall correctly.

That is a question for someone who understands the significance of that! I have no idea if that is a lot or a little. I do know the computer is supposed to have 3 gigs available. Is that relevant to my situation? I just don't know enough about it.

I use FireFox. Been using it since WinXP and now on Win10. I can't stand IE — or Edge as it's called. I just checked and FF takes up 240 meg when running.

Funny, I used to use Firefox until there were problems running stuff with it. That must have been 5-6 years ago. I liked it but it was just too incompatible at the time. Is it any better now?

I've not had any incompatibility problem. A couple of years ago when still on WinXP, I had a problem where certain web pages didn't show some icons. Turned out to be a plug-in or add-on that was causing the problem.

Even after I dumped Firefox, I kept Thunderbird as my e-mail; I like it as it is simple, quick and efficient.
Maybe I'll try Firefox again. It can't be much worse than IE right now!
Oh, another quick question: Is AdBlocker Plus likely to cause my problems? It runs in the background, so I never really think about it. It works well, but I wonder if it slows things up?

The only add-on or plug-in that caused me problems was 'Disconnect'. I still use it because it blocks a lot of stuff, but if I ever see where there are missing icons on a webpage (like to order or add to cart), I disable it.
