Star Wars: Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith

I'm looking forward to it as well.

I've been staying out of the Star Wars aisle of the toy section at Target, and I've been trying to stay away from the plot synopses that have been floating around the Web. I don't even read the Star Wars fan club emails that I've been getting.

I just want my first viewing to be my first impression. It worked for I and II.

Maybe if he'd promise a different writer and director, I might share that sentiment. I've got a feeling I and II could have been so much more if just a little effort had gone into the project. What happened to the George Lucas who could take $10 million and produce what we know as Episode 4? The original films had better acting, smart dialogue, and yes, better special effects than the new films.

And we've all been suckered. I'll be there opening night as well, but my expectations are pretty low. If the pattern holds, we'll see between two and four action/fight scenes that can be turned into video games but look completely fake (because it's all CGI), with wooden acting in between, and at the end Darth Vader will rise up and the theatre will cheer.

Old timers: remember when Darth Vader was BOOED? Now he's the hero. There's something wrong with that.

besides cartoon and video game voiceovers, his acting career outside of Star Wars has been virtually zilch. 25 years later, it is almost hard not to laugh at his bad acting in Episodes 4-6.

ummmmmm.... except for Mark Hamill

besides cartoon and video game voiceovers, his acting career outside of Star Wars has been virtually zilch. 25 years later, it is almost hard not to laugh at his bad acting in Episodes 4-6.

Oh, pooh, his acting was a good or better than William Shatner in any Star Trek series or movie!

You do realize that a comparison with Shatner still leaves a lot of room...

They're both better than Matt "Guitar" Murphy in Blues Brothers, though.

Speaking of Mark/Luke...

We started calling him Luke Skywalker, Jedi Weenie. Hearing him whine like a wuss through dialogue like, "But I was gonna go to Toshi Station and pick up some power convertorrsss!" and, "With the blast shield down, I can't even see! How am I supposed to fight?!?" really fleshed out the "weenie" part.

Seems to me that he was very effective at communicating to you Luke's character. Sounds like good acting to me...

What are you talking about? Didn't you see Corvette Summer... now that's some fine acting by Master Luke.

you could see detail that was not there before.

I'm lucky enough to have an IMAX theatre just up the road from my house, so in 2002 I saw epII in IMAX. What helped this more than anything is that they had to edit the film, and removed some of the especially bad parts (the "sand" discussion*, for instance). Unfortunately, the immense size revealed too much detail and the CGI looked even more fake

. But the sound mix was incredible. I give THX a thumbs up, and ILM gets a thumbs down. No doubt epIII will get giant treatment as well. The sound probably won't match "The Return of the King" but it will come darn close.

I'm just interested to see how they get from the shiny-n-clean Naboo and Old Republic stuff to the run-down, oil-stained used-car look of Ep IV.

I still think that the Millenium Falcon is the most badass spaceship ever.
