Does anyone know a good resource for finding information on the acoustic string bass? I have inherited one but don't really know a thing about it, other than what I remember from a methods class more than ten years ago.

The best resource that I can think of is the 2xbass list. Here's some information on how to get onto it:

If you're really in doubt about your bass, consult Bob's list of luthiers, organized by state. I've found that a little telephone work can produce great results.

The luthier that I use builds basses as well as repairs and modifies them. His ministrations made a huge difference in the playability of my own bass.

His opinion of Chinese carved basses is that they can be pretty good, but that you shouldn't expect a bargain if you're going to buy a decent one. Sound familiar?

(And yeah, I agree with Wade--Bob Golihur is a really nice guy)

Thanks for all the help. I registered to be on the Talkbass forum to read what they say. Now I just need to learn to play it.

I need to look at it more closely, but from what I remember I think that it is an Epiphone. It was my father's bass. He bought/played it when he was in college and it helped pay his way through. He had it stored in a closet and I didn't see it much except for perhaps a dozen times (to play some jazz with traveling musicians) in my lifetime. It has a french bow, some rosin and a piece of rubber for the end pin, gut strings except the bottom string, which is steel. He bought a new gig bag for it before he died.

It has tiny chips here and there, but it seems to be pretty solid. I'll have to get out the digital camera. I wouldn't be able to tell if it were spectacular or craptastic, as I still haven't found the leadpipe
