My (14+ year) career has been exclusively in math education (developing products, not teaching). Joe, the point you make is argued constantly in the math education community, and I don't think it's likely to change any time soon. As with any kind of technology, it's only good if you know how to use it.

The original example is what is called mental math. It is supposed to teach a quick way to figure out the answer in your head. There is some logic in the concept. With all "new" concepts there are up and down sides. I was subjected to the "new" concept of phonics when I was in grade school. The object was to use sounds to help in reading as apposed to the traditional see the written word and then sound it out. The result was you learned to read slower and you could never spell correctly. I hate it when they experiment with a new teaching concept and then @#$@ the mind of kids forever.
