The problem with kids these days at my office, is that they are too lazy to go outside and read the sundial to find out what time it is.
In my day, if it was cloudy, we just worked until the sun came out again!!

It's just a number, Bloke... you're only as old as you feel!

And, just because it's a new year, while discussing this, please don't call it mathematics. It's arithmetic!

Is arithmetic not mathematical in nature? By the way, is a sousaphone a tuba?

Arithmetic is a very small subset of mathematics.

How about doing it in base 7?

Just to keep this thread on a higher plane I respectfully submit 343 represented in the number bases from 2 through 16 in ascending order of base - (left justified to please the progressive crowd):
101010111
110201
11113
2333
1331 - because 7 base 6 is 11 and 11^3 = 1331 in all number bases between 4 and 10
1000 - (demonstrating Kiltie's 7^3 (or 7**3 in a real computer language))
527
421
343
292
247
205
1A7
17D
157

Seven cubed is three hundred fourty-three. I learned that in (Surprise! Surprise!) Seventh grade.
But I didn't see that choice offered, so I voted BAT.

My (14+ year) career has been exclusively in math education (developing products, not teaching). Joe, the point you make is argued constantly in the math education community, and I don't think it's likely to change any time soon. As with any kind of technology, it's only good if you know how to use it.
I think this clip from the Simpsons addresses the subject pretty well.

Bloke, your first post got dangerously close to "common core" math.

All we did was recite times tables and sing inchworm.
I had to learn 8X9 = 8x10-8 from the street.
Just like sex.

Did you fall asleep after your first division?

Yes, I saw 7^3 and thought bitwise XOR.

The original example is what is called mental math. It is supposed to teach a quick way to figure out the answer in your head. There is some logic in the concept. With all "new" concepts there are up and down sides. I was subjected to the "new" concept of phonics when I was in grade school. The object was to use sounds to help in reading as apposed to the traditional see the written word and then sound it out. The result was you learned to read slower and you could never spell correctly. I hate it when they experiment with a new teaching concept and then @#$@ the mind of kids forever.

Yet another example of using our children as guinea pigs, all to justify the salaries of a cadre of "researchers" who never spent a day in front of a classroom....

I always keep a few 2 dollar bills in my wallet. It's enlightening to see how the current crop of teenage cashiers cope with one of them.
