The quality of the food is outstanding, the prices are cheap and they pay their employees quite well (who says it can't be done) We do the lion share of our shopping there and only buy things at the "regular grocery stores" on sale.

Wow, I wish we had stores like that in California! Here the grocery stores have been converting one by one into loyalty card stores with the corresponding steep rise in prices. People really seem to be fooled by the cards, thinking they are saving money while the price of an average bag of groceries goes up almost 20%.

These european companies definitely have a different business model than the American ones, and it just reminds me of the opinion europeans have that all americans do is think of tricks and schemes.

Aldi, the only reason I could afford to eat the way I did in grad school. I sure wish they would expand to the reservations.

We bought groceries at Aldis when I was a kid. Most of their "Best Choice" and "Always Save" brand goods were crap IMO. The one we shopped at did have decent meat if I remember correctly. The place was always a madhouse and you could fill a car full of groceries for $1.

I've never heard of this place. Looks interesting though....

That was true back in the day, but it has changed a lot in the last couple of years. The brands they feature now are easily as good (prob. made by the "major" food companies) or better than the big players. In the last couple of years we find ourselves buying more and more stuff there because it is just better, other than the fact that we are saving a ton of money.

Nope...No membership. Anyone can go.

Aldi stores are very small grocery stores with no service, few if any shelves, no frills at all but very very very cheap food. They also, from time to time, have various other goods.

I agree with Sean that not everything was great, but most of what I bought was just fine and exceptional for the price. Most importantly, I could always afford plenty. Then, I could get the specialized things from Asian or other specialty markets.

Another thing I always liked about Aldi is that they seem to often put them near the poorer ends of town (where people without cars might be able to shop and with food they might be able to afford) 99% of the time their prices beat the pants off of Sams club and Wal Mart.

Aldi's is good for snack foods, exact same junk everyone else carries, but at a much lower price. I've only been in 2 Aldi's (one in Illinois and one in New York) and you couldn't tell them apart from the inside.. you can't really go with a list, but they do tend to have some neat novelty foods(I got some "already cooked" roast beef in a frozen bag for that yielded an end product better than anybody in my family can produce! ...for $6, fed 4). Snack foods, frozen goods, canned/boxed food is good from Aldi's... the fruit is almost always terrible(fruit flies about 25% of the time), and I'd never buy bread or milk or eggs from there.

They are also an official carrier of "Bubba Cola"! I had this a few years ago and, while i'm not a big soda drinker, it was the best tasting soda I'd ever had... and $.33/2 litre.

I went to one when in Ithaca, New York. Now, the closest one to me (Birmingham, AL) is in Kennesaw, Georgia. DOH! I could use some cheap eats!!!

My favorite are the bacon and cheddar black angus burgers.
