Well, I just bought back the YBL 322 bass tbone that I sold with everything else a few years ago when I thought I would not survive my illness. The guy still had it, and I bought it back for what he paid me for it. I want as many of my toys replaced as I can, within reason.....but what is a standard bass tbone mouthpiece? What I found I have that fits shank-wise and seems to play in tune is a weird looking thing JK Exclusive 9CL. It actually seems more like a euph mouthpiece, but...what is a "standard" bass tbone piece? I was looking at a Kelly 1-1/2 G because it's cheap. I'm not having range problems on the one I have, but it doesn't sound all that "bass trombone-y." And seems it might be on the shallow side based on the numbering.

That's an excellent mouthpiece. Not just my opinion.

I have some JK bass trombone mouthpieces, like 1AK. (9CL apparently is in the same scheme, with a 25mm cup diameter - euph mouthpiece. L is normal throat, K is bass trombone throat, A and C refer to depth.) OK for me - relatively conical interior profile, rim has a little flatness to it, not too deep.

But I think the only reason not to go with the Kelly 1½G is if you have reason to think it isn't your size. It's perfectly good, as long as you get the crystal green anyway. (I know a lot of players want the orange or red, but the green has a darker tone and in the end you'll be happier.)

Well, the ebay (cheaper) options didn't include the green (and you're kidding anyway, right?) so I got solid blue; wanted white because that seems to stand out less, but it wasn't there. For about $20 I'm sure it will be fine. I use a Kelly 5G, with some tape on the shank, in my euph, and it works better for me than any of the metal pieces I have (basically 6 1/2 AL.)

Check out the Faxx 1 1/2 G - it is a pretty good mouthpiece.

I play the original version of the Griego GP (Gerry Pagano) which I love, but it is $210 vs. 40 bucks for the Faxx that is sold at the horn guys.

I would go with a metal mouthpiece over the plastic unless you just plan on using it outdoor in the cold.

For a YBL 322 bass tbone a Yamaha 59 is a fine fit - its in between a Bach 1 1/2 and a Bach 1 1/4. The crop often up cheap on tromboneforum.org . For many returning bass trombine players a Bach 1 1/2 is the standard, but I better like the alternative, a Laskey 85 MD, which is an improved Schilke 59 , a very well playing mpc on a Yamaha bass bone. If you want it larger, the Yamaha Yeo replica (in silver) is cheap and often found on fromboneforum.org. Best luck, Marc

you can't go wrong with a 1 1/2G. it gives a good full tone but still has focus. Many experienced bassboners use a larger piece, but I think many sound woofy, and have fluffy articulation. Especially with a part timer or someone who does not have full command of the instrument.

One thing many people do not realize it that you still should sound like a trombone...granted a big one, but not a euphonium or tuba on a stick....
