Shipping from anywhere will cost more than buying one new from Walmart, so you might want to mention where you are. I bought a 23" set last year for $150 from Circuit City.

Better, I'd check your local classifieds, and check ebay (you can search only sellers within XX miles of your ZIP code, then go pick it up instead of shipping).

Or, just watch for sales & pick up a new one for $90 or so.

How big will your dorm be? TVs take up a lot of space. Does your school require computer ownership? If so, consider a tv-tuner video card.

I put an ATI all-in-wonder 7500 in my system 3 years ago and it still works great. No need to "upgrade" to an expensive card later if you don't play video games.

You wouldn't believe the number of times I've used the space I saved by not buying a tv. It can really add up, especially in a dorm environment.

The other upside is that if you have a big enough hard drive, you don't have to get a TiVo.

Wait until after you move in next fall to get a TV. Most college towns have 2nd hand stores where you can pick stuff up cheap. Otherwise... visit Wal-Mart after you settle into your new quarters.

I have one of these in my computer. Works great. You can size the picture to any size you want... full screen or just in the corner. I used it to watch CNBC while trading stocks a few years ago (when the stock market only went up... LOL). Still use it quite a bit. With a descent set of speakers (and subwoofer) it sounds better than my 27" Sony in the family room.

I'll second the TV tuner card for your computer.

Either that, or just don't get a TV at all. Hopefully, you'll be busy enough that you won't be able to really justify one. Or, your roommate will bring one of his own, and having two TVs in one dorm room would be silly.

Or, you can watch your friends' TVs (or the one in the lounge) and be more active socially.

For me, in college, a TV was the most useless thing that I ever had. I got one as a birthday present before school, and after a month or two, it quit working. We took it back to Best Buy, and rather than get a replacement, I decided to return it for store credit and picked up new speakers for the car and a few CDs. I never missed the TV.

lol... by radio, of course! Or by going to the sports bar, or to his rich friend's place with the 70" plasma HDTV and 4000-watt SenSurround stereo system.

Why not drop over to your local Goodwill (or, if you have a community recycler, there) and pick up some used old-but-usable "portable" set for $15?

You don't really need HDTV on a 52-inch plasma screen, do you?

Do it once you're situated, so you don't have to haul the thing along with you when you're moving in.

I also say go for the tv tuner card. They can be had for less than $60 and it's one of the best things I've ever added to a computer.
