My wife recently bought a jar of OxiClean and thinks it is the greatest thing in the world, but I can't even look at the container without imagining that bearded moron on TV who is constantly shouting in those lame infomercials.

Oh Oxyclean Guy isn't all that bad. If you ever stay up late there's this guy in these STUPID outfits telling you to buy his video on how to get free money from the government. He's jumping up and down, yelling, making these ridiculous faces. If you don't like Oxyclean you'll HATE this guy. I wish I could find his pic to show yall...

And I agree with you, FWIW.

I've also got a bellyfull of the ditech guy, the "can you hear me now" guy, the nauseating "Room Store" couple (may be regional) , the entire "I'm lovin' it" McDonalds campaign -- this is why DVR/PVR/TiVo is, perhaps, the best invention in the last 20 years.

At least the OxyClean guy once accomplished something. He was an olympic track medalist (I don't recall the event; I'm thinking middle-distance running).

Rabbit ears, eh... hmmm...

A DVR is a Digital Video Recorder (aka Personal Video Recorder; TiVo is the most well-known name brand). The concept is this: my show starts at 5:00, but I don't get home 'til 6:00? Set the machine up to automatically record it, like a VCR. Nice, but not revolutionary. BUT WAIT -- suppose my show starts at 6:00, and I don't get home 'til 6:15? No problem, I can start watching it while it's still recording. Another show starts before I'm done watching that one? No problem, it'll record while I watch. Or how about this one: ten minutes from the end of a show I'm watching in real-time, the phone rings/someone's at the door/nature calls/the dog knocks over a lamp -- whatever. I hit pause, handle the emergency, then come back and continue. Watching a show and missed a line of dialogue? Rewind.

I don't watch a lot of TV by most people's standards -- I probably actually watch about an hour to an hour and a half per day, usually the Simpsons and perhaps Family Guy, or Jeopardy, or maybe an old movie. I watch while I'm fixing dinner, folding clothes, opening mail, doing personal email and tubenet, etc. But by time-shifting with the DVR, I can watch a 30-minute show in 20 minutes, and an hour-long show in 40 minutes. So I can watch an hour and a half of TV in an hour. That's the significance of a DVR: if you DO watch TV, it literally buys back some of your time for you, and lets you skip a LOT of commercials.

Digital Video Recorder.
TiVo being a particular brand of DVR.

PVR=Personal Video Recorder

Think VCR using a computer disk instead of a tape. So faster FF/RW, and simple deletes, with out ghosting, and no tape wear.

Probably right there. But PVR at least allow one to time shift easily. I seldom watch live broadcast now. Just record it and watch it later on my schedule. If I decide 10 minutes in I'm not interested, delete, and do/watch something else. Plus I can always stop/pause if desired. No more waiting on a commercial (mostly no more commercial, skip past them) to get a drink , or snack or a toilet trip. No more missing the climax because the phone rings, thers a know at the door, or the baby's crying.
