Over the last year or so nearly every CD I had shipped from Amazon.com or anywhere else has arrived with a cracked case.

I assume that the USPS is the culprit. Maybe if they raised the price of postage this would stop...

I just thought that now they come molded with cracks. Or that they're inescapable... carpenter's crack = CD crack

I think that the problem is the jewel case itself. Made of thin, brittle, polystyrene, it can't take much stress.

There are makers of unbreakable jewel cases made of HDPE, but they're not crystal-clear like polystyrene and they cost a bit more to manufacture. They can bend without breaking, which is bad news for the CD inside.

Maybe the CD shippers need to redesign their packing scheme.

The latest research by "The Half-Fast Creekers" showed that most folks use a C.D. book for thier latest favorites and the jewel cases they came in are discarded.Chuck (G) is right about the flimsiness and poor quality of jewel cases.
This led us to order cardboard covers for our latest C.D. order.The tune list and info are on the back side of the cover so people who pick one up from our display can turn it over and read it without opening anything.
The folks who bought C.D.'s from our first two printings with the origional jewel cases are thrilled that they have the first edition.

I think Chuck is right. The standard jewel case is a fragile design. So is the ole cassette case, but the smaller surface area helped it survive.

Better packaging fo shippmemt would help. I use a mail DVD rental program, and they went through many shipping designs. None were effective. They have more shipping centers now, to limit the time in the system, which reduces the breakage rates. The rest is just the cost of business.

Many CD retailers will ship replacement cases if you request one. But they don't always match the original style, especially the multiple CD cases.

For single disc cases, you best bet is buy in bulk. I bought a bunk for the bulk CDRs I got at about $0.18 each. Most survived the trip to me, since it was 50 cases in a big box. They are identical to most cases, so you can transfer the printed liners and never know the difference. You can get black trays or clear now, which covers 95% or more of the current CDs.

I bought from these guys in 2001. They also have quad cases(2x the size of a single), and the double disc case that's the size of a single. Not sure where to get the dual dics, double size case though. I need a few of them, but not enough to go looking
