Because their size is proportional to the wavelength of the sound they are designed to produce?

A little-known fact is that the very first large tuba created a standard for all that came thereafter. That huge tuba was the "Ulence" with five valves. The BB flatUlence was a gas to play, particularly blastissimo.

Why are other instruments (by and large) small?
