You misread the story. The student discovered a way to convert decimals into fractions.
TI scientifics have a button that normally does this. For instance, type in .5 and hit the "a b/c" button and the screen will show 1_|2
TI made special models without this button for students. Apparently the same result could still be achieved with another button combination.
Pretty sneaky, if you ask me.
Of course, most kids at my school were more thrilled when they learned how to type "boob" on one of these things. Ahhh, public education.
