A thread for bad ideas...

Post by humBell »

Feel free to stick this in a more suitable place...

Bad idea 1:

Has anyone ever made a trombone with a helix slide?

Wanted to say spiral, but in the spiral staircase sense, not the flat sense where curviture is changing constantly, and so such a slide wouldn't.

Be hard to make and hard to fix, and how the player moves it is... well i don't see an easy obvious answer. But it could be more compact, so you could make a longer useable slide, and positions could be described by angles. And my justifcation for being tickled by the idea: sprinkler water key.
Thanks for playing!

the elephant wrote:Bad idea: just bad. And creepy AF.

I think the mechanical airflow was a problem for the old oversized BBBb tubas i've come across on the interwebs... I thought i remember someone saying that was a plan, but not seeing any further mention...

My forays into trying to create one have been unproductive.

I tried sticking a balloon over a mouthpiece, inflating it through the shank, and then putting into a baritone, and trying to make music the same way you'd make noise by pulling the edges tight and letting the air out. Results were anti-climatic...

That was early thoughts of trying to conceive an Edgar Bergen style brass instrument act...

Put that down as another bad idea?

Anyway, all that said, robotic instrument playing is still kinda cool, even if it is harder to call music than one might wish.

Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

Only time i been asked for tux slacks is as part of a marching uniform for parades, where it would have been an extra bad idea. Or at least so i imagine...

Didn't Early Williams make a slide that was octagonal? A repairman's worst nightmare...

... and being a member of the back row, I've been "asked" to donate black tie, white tie, and even once my tails jacket to members of the violin section ( and to the concertmaster, no less!). Making replacements out of gaffer's tape becomes an art (well, not for the tails, but... ) 8)
