Mendez Cornet

I own Mendez trumpet #4 so I basically know what's worth. I have an opportunity to buy a Mendez CORNET of similar vintage but don't have a clue about it's value. Few people would even recognize it as not being a trumpet. About the only difference is the MP receiver and the leadpipe. Any ideas?

Dan, try this link. Perhaps it will clarify things. Or not.

There's one that sold recently on eBay for $472.99

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Olds-Mendez-lo ... 7675.l2557

eBay prices don't dictate the market (I tend to think they are about 20% lower than what an instrument could sell for locally or from a reputable source) but they are decent baseline, Imho.

As a sequel... I have quite a few 'interesting' horns in my personal collection and it seems that all of them have a 'story'. Sooo... I'm going to add a page to my website that will include images and the stories behind the horns... beginning with these two Mendez horns. Here....

I'll bet he WANTED to give a horn a pitch once in a while!

Dan, as your write-up suggests, someone's memory is foggy about when they acquired the horn. That horn is engraved with "Fullerton". Thus, it could not have been manufactured earlier than 1954 when the Olds factory was relocated from Los Angeles to Fullerton CA. (I toured the Los Angeles factory in 1950. Very interesting experience, excellent craftsmen.)

Yes... you are correct. The history of Olds is well documented. I had hoped to get the real details about trumpet 86004 before the fellow I bought it from died.
