Dairy Queen Freezes are perhaps the best thing to happen to me on a hot day. Just wanted to share that with everyone at the grumpy party.

I can't believe they stopped offering caramel over here.

I would ALWAYS get a caramel sunday but they stopped making them. PFFT!!!

When I lived in California, there was a little shop near me that served shaved ice with a red bean sauce. It was really good.
If you're ever in San Francisco, don't miss trying Polly Ann's Ice Cream on Noreiga in the Sunset district. 50 flavors, including ginger, lychee, durian(!) and vegetable.

I find it hard to belive that a DQ no longer has caramel. It's used on too many things to no have it. Now, it might not be
on the menu but at DQ that doesn't matter. Most DQs no longer list the
chocolate covered cherries Blizzard but you can order one and get it.
They have limited menu space, and much is reserved for new item and current promoptions. But the old standards are still going strong.

Back in Jersey (where I used to live) they call Rita's and the like "Water Ices". I know water ice also as Italian Ice. some places in that neck of the woods layer water ice with frozen custard and call it a gelato. Even though it is NOT a true gelato, it is possibly my FAVORITE summer treat bar none.

Also, you can still get a Peanut Butter and Fudge Malt at Sonic, even though it is also gone from the menu.
Before I started losing weight, my last five pounds were primarily attributable to these. I've not had one this entire calendar year!
For low-fat, BTW, try "Edy's" or "Dreyer's" low-fat at the grocery store (different names, regionally, for the same product) -- especially their Triple Chocolate and their Choc. Chip Cookie Dough (hard to find). Butter Pecan is also very good. None of these seem at all "low-fat" to me.

Joe, read the labels on these things. Yeah, they're low-fat, but not low-cal. And it
calories that make ya look like a Teletubby! This is what makes the Seinfeld "Nonfat Yogurt" skit so funny...
In fact, eating fat instead of carbohydrates (which is what the fat gets replaced with) will make you less hungry than eating the nonfat thing. Plenty of folks got fat eating Snackwells...

Actually, they don't call this "low-fat", but "No Sugar Added". Look for the blue-striped lids.
Triple Chocolate (choc ice cream + choc swirl + choc chips) has 100 calories, 2.7 grams of fat in a 1/2 cup serving (okay, true confession: I usually eat closer to a cup, but less often than every other day -- probably twice a week).
True, many low-fat ice creams are LOADED with sugar, and many sugar-free or low-carb ice creams are LOADED with fat. This represents, I believe, a good balance. Edy's/Dreyer's has a first-rate product for folks who are trying to lose weight but still want a treat now and then.
It DOES contain a bit of Maltitol, polydextrose, and sorbitol, but it must be very little. These usually give me gas in sugar-free candies I've eaten (it is known to cause other gastric side-effects in some people, which I've not experienced) but I've never had any problem with the ice cream.

I'll second that - Rita's Italian Ice gelatos - man they're filthy good. It has been one of the best surprises when I moved to Pittsburgh and is now my favorite summer tasty. Brusters chocolate mint ice cream is another fav of mine, beats the pants off Baskin Robbins!

Yeah, the Rita's Gelato is pretty wicked. The frozen custard also reminds me of Kohr Brother's on the Jersey shore....good times!
FWIW, as a lifelong resident of NJ, I've only heard Italian Ices (which is what I've known them by my whole life) called "Water Ices" in the central Jersey area...my best guess is it's a regional thing.
Tim Murphy, who's always marveled that a state as small as NJ has such distinct regions...

I just started working at TCBY(This Country's Best Yogurt) last week. They seem to offer some really nice treats, I haven't had many of the menu items, but it seems like a good place to be. They offer many low fat, non fat, no sugar, low carb ice cream and frozen yogurt flavors for the "health conscious." So if you're in the Clifton area, stop by the TCBY on the corner of Clifton ave and Allwood road, I should be there alot starting next week. The owner/regional manager is a tuba/sousaphone player also, so you'd be supporting a fellow player.

The "health conscious" part cracks me up...because "no sugar added" really means "artificial chemical sweetener added" and I wouldn't touch one of those with the proverbial pole. If I want sugar, I'll just eat sugar!!
