Ah, yes: before sanitary sewer, that is how we determined if the septic tank was working properly, especially after a rainstorm!

I might never have guessed what you meant even if you'd spelled it correctly. Hereabouts we say "drain field."
The idea of a field infested with leeches is somewhat off-putting, but I guess that's blind prejudice - at least, I can't recall hearing of disease spread by leeches, which puts them way ahead of the bloodsucking insects.

Pardon the incorrect spelling - I'm still a little jetlagged....
I haven't cut my grass for almost two weeks, and was amazed how green the grass was over my
L-E-A-C-H field.....

O goodie...... I learned a new term or expression today.. Leach Field and Drain Field (both handle the liquid outflow from the septic tank). So where in the country do they call it a leach field?

I've lived in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, and Colorado. Never heard it called anything but a Leach Field. I even had one at my house in Michigan.
This is the first I've heard it called a Drain Field.

Well, if you DID have a leech field, I have heard that leeches are actually useful if you are swelling up from blood leaking into your tissue from broken capillaries from a recent bruise-inducing blow. This is well before the bruise itself appears. They suck the blood out and the swelling is much lessened. Like, if someone socks you in the eye and it is starting to swell badly...apply leeches from your LEECH field.
