Probably just me, but there seems to have been a shift from buyers (usually just tire-kickers) asking "why are you selling it?" to sellers now volunteering that they're selling it for __________ reason.

Do any of you really read that stuff and think to yourself "gee, that's a really good reason to sell that." Maybe you do, but I highly doubt it. Or "man, they're selling that to really 'upgrade!"

Every time I see someone explaining why they're selling something, regardless of their story, my thoughts are the same:

You're selling it (what ever the "it" is) because you want money more than you want "it."

Who really cares why you want the money more or what you're going to do with the money?

Rarely does it influence me, but I do find it interesting if the information is divulged.

Most often, it's just interesting to see what people are thinking, and why they are or aren't interested in certain things. It has nothing to do with sales or purchases, but I like the human side of things. I mean, this place is all a bunch of tuba players talking about stuff, so why not talk about what we are or are not going to buy/sell, and why?

Maybe the for sale advertisement isn't the best place for it, but still, it's just shop talk.

And sometimes, there's really not a concrete reason. I sold my Willson a while back, because I just felt ready to move on to something else. It was an intangible, but hard to ignore feeling. I liked the tuba very much, but I haven't missed it at all since selling it. (My old Miraphone 188, on the other hand... aaargh!)

When you reach a certain time in your life, you realize that the things you have collected over time get to be too much. Yes, you want money more than the thing you are selling, but you are distributing things you have treasured to a new good home so that it will be used. I once had 11 tubas. I now have 4. The 7 have found new homes where I believe they are being used and enjoyed. In my house they were collecting dust. I use what I now have regularly, and I'm fighting the urge to add to my collection again. (Do they have a 12 step program for this?)

One thing I don't notice very often is a comment like "I don't like it this horn. It is a lousy instrument."

I guess people don't sell those instruments.

Nobody ever admits that they just don't like the tuba they are selling.

Worse than "why I am selling" is "this is best example of this model ever."

If that were true, all of my tubas would be Alexanders

But I do love mine- and anyway, it's kind of unique these days.

And (oh, the horror) I did actually sell one of the tubas in my stable- the Besson 787 (a.k.a. the Peashooter)- through Baltimore Brass.

I was just thinking this afternoon, what am I going to say about that Pan American Eb Giant Bass. The straight story would be "For sale: tuba shaped object. Sounds great down to C below staff; intonation problems too many to list. Selling to make room for something I could play in public."

One by one I bought and later sold my King 2280 euphonium, Hirsbrunner euphonium, HN White 5 valve double-bell euphonium, Miraphone 5050 euphonium, Bach stamped Yamaha 321S euphonium, and Besson 967 Sovereign euphonium.

I did not give a reason in the ad because I thought it would be redundant to mention I was selling them because they are euphoniums.
