In particular, I want to get a spreadsheet alternative to Excel. Main reason being that I don't need the other parts of Office, such as Word. I am tired of having to fork out $$ every year just to have a spreadsheet to do my budget and a few simple lists.
The last free download, another complete office suite, made everything else run poorly on my computer.
Any ideas?

Still my favorite after all these years, starting in the DOS era. The Standard edition is reasonably priced:

And WP still has the Reveal Codes function.

Re: An alternative to MS Office?
Open Office does everything I need and does it well. That being said, there is nothing I need to do in tremendous detail, just open, create and send spreadsheets and text documents. These documents can be saved or created in all the usual formats as MS. If you are looking for big-time tech stuff, maybe you would need to look but I have never exceeded their capability.

Thanks for the input. I have downloaded Open Office and it looks like it should do the job.

I have a cheap Chromebook that I use for websurfing, and when I discovered the need to do a little basic word processing, and spreadsheets for simple lists, I discovered Google Docs, it does basic functions most often needed for letters, simple Documents, and it works with Excel created spreadsheets, and word documents. It's free and it works for what you describe. If I have to do something complex I still use the PC and office.

Re: An alternative to MS Office?
Libreoffice is pretty decent unless you need specific VBA functions. If you have no idea what that is then don’t worry about it unless you’ve inherited very complex spreadsheets to maintain.

I share your aversion for yearly charges. Have you looked on auction sites? There are dozens of ads on {you know who] for older standalone versions of Office or Excel. I have been using a 2010 standalone version for years with no charges after the original cost.
{P.S. Caveat Emptor. You probably know that not all auction site sellers are reputable. Check their feedback and discuss the product with them before buying.}

Google Sheets is the closest thing to Excel.
