Re: Banned
I miss Dale, and hope he is doing well. Not sure whoever else got banned, but I guess it's possible!

Nope, I'm not banned. It just reminded me of the joke, and I want to start the New Year on a light note. Heavier notes are banned right now.

What if you got Orchestraed instead of Banned?MaryAnn wrote:If I were banned, how would I know? Reminds me of the joke about the lawyer questioning the guy on the witness stand.
Lawyer: Can you give me an example of something you forgot?
Witness: How would I know?

Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

Re: Banned
Was for a while. But it quit working.....and I realized it was living in about 55 degrees and about five percent humidity and was not in adjustment for that. So I moved it to a warmer and humider (?) place and now the low notes are there, but I am again having horrible reed problems. I don't seem to be able to learn how to sharpen a knife, and anything bought still has to be adjusted. I love the instrument but the reeds are as reputed.Mike C855B wrote:Does that mean you're playing your oboe?MaryAnn wrote:... Heavier notes are banned right now.

Yes, you are lucky you weren't "caned" for it!the elephant wrote:I am not intending to condescend, here, because I am pretty sure you know this already, however, just in case: A reed knife is not sharpened like a regular knife; it has a specific procedure to get its special edge, which is a bit more like a micro saw than a razor.MaryAnn wrote:I don't seem to be able to learn how to sharpen a knife…
I am only mentioning this because I know how much anger and frustration I caused a former girlfriend when I “helped” her by sharpening her knives for her as a surprise just before the 1991 IDRS convention. I remember feeling lucky that she could not strangle me through the phone handset!

Re: Banned
I intellectually understand how the knife is sharpened, but the knowledge does not transfer to the technique. Somewhat like my high range on horn, which I understand how to do but never succeeded at and hence became a low horn specialist. I don't think I can be a low knife specialist.....
My teacher did not use a burr on his knife and he could and did make wonderful reeds in minutes. College professor, now retired and playing principal in a regional orchestra, not some dummy. He was one of those people with a mechanical gift who could also adjust a "gone to hell" oboe in minutes and have it play wonderfully. I understand most people do use a burr. The last person who attempted to teach me had one of those metal rod things; he'd go five times on one side, one time on the other side, hand me the knife and it would be unbelievably sharp. I would do the same thing and hand the knife back to him and it would not cut butter. Lack of talent on my part (I'm good at nitty IQ things, not nitty physical things) and I think I'll do what other helpless sharpener hope-ees have done and buy a razor knife.
