The lowest temperature I experienced was -20º in Lake Placid, NY (the air was calm, so there was no added wind chill).

The highest I experienced was 115º in Death Valley, CA (101º at midnight that evening in Baker [good name for a hot town] CA).

So my life range is 135º.

Coldest ever: -10 F in northwest Jawjuh (our area record). Stepped out on the back steps in a t-shirt and bare feet. Didn't feel too bad. Then a tiny breeze picked up and I broke the sound barrier getting back into the house. About 2-1/2 months later we had the snowstorm of the century for my area; 3+ ft of snow in my back yard, non-drifted.

I don't want any more winters like that. No power for a week in near-record-breaking cold. A tiny gas space heater saved our hides.

Temps are sensationalized.
Minneapolis is KNOWN for it's VERY cold winters...Check.
The coastal Pacific Northwest is know for it's moderate winters...Check.

20 degrees, 15 degrees, 0 degrees, etc. have been sensationalized by an anti-science ("feels like" is "science"...??...and to whom, specifically, does it feel like that...??) called "wind chill".

When it was ten-or-so degrees, and we (10-and-11-year-old safety patrol boys working a busy 4-lane US highway commercial corner with vehicles driving by at 40 mph, etc.) came in from our before-school duties, our reward for really-cold days was a cup of hot chocolate (real milk, real cocoa, real sugar, real vanilla...not a powder packet) before going to class...and about all we missed was the pledge, Bible-reading, and the announcements.

School CANCELLED due to COLD...?? pfft.
The coldest I've experienced was -53 F in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan. It froze and broke the fuel pump on my '79 Mercury Marquis.

I was attending Lake Superior State University at the time (1988), and school wasn't cancelled. So I had to walk and hopefully hail a taxi along the way, which fortunately happened about 30 yards from my apartment.

Not having enough money for the return trip home, I ended up walking home from classes later that day--about two miles--and by then it had warmed up to -20.

Fortunately, the wind was dead calm all day.

Man-made whatever-it-is-labeled-today is surely going to cause us all to be vortexed to death.

It's not just the polar vortex, but other weather phenomena that gets breathlessly hyped by nerdy weather folk on TV.

It galls me that a few days ago, right before the deadly tornado outbreak in Alabama, the Weather Channel on-air meteorologists babbled on and on about the Tor:Con (Tornado Conditions) index for that area. They were so excited, it was as if they WANTED a tornado to hit down there.

Below zero again tonight. Another 5 to 8 inches of snow this weekend. Houses have two-story icicles (no joke!) and the snow is about 2 feet deep everywhere.

Winter is still going strong up here!

Joe, I moved here from New York City... taxes here seem awesome (even if they aren't).

Pittsburgh is a nice city....they are lucky to be there, having him play in a great orchestra, and enjoying the culture of the area...
