Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

Define "hedge". Since you talk of eradicating it from the woods, are you talking about privet hedge, rather than hedge trees which are also known as Osage orange or bois dárc or scientifically as Maclura pomifera and has many other common names, including "hedge".
Since there is no substitute for sunlight, could you remove some of the trees that are shading the ends of your hedgerow?
Fertilizer-wise, it probably doesn't need anything fancy, just a common 10-10-10 (or whatever) would help it.
