Too many 5 lb catfish is a wonderful problem to have.
For kids, I'm a fan of the cane pole with braided line. For spincasters, I believe the braided lines aren't smooth enough to slide thru the opening in the reel and may also get hung up on the pick-up pins, so for these consider using a tough mono (like Trilene XT) on the reel, then a barrel swivel, then a 4 foot braided leader leading to your hook.
As kids we caught multitudes of bullheads up to 1.5 lbs, carp, and sunnies on cane poles and spincasters with mono, and had a blast. I can't imagine the fun of a 5 lb cat on a cane pole from shore! I'm envying the catfish fillets with hush puppies...
Enjoy!
