Overweight and marching
It seems to me that a lot of guys in this band are really too heavy to be marching in this parade on a hot day. Or, any day. Whew!

Here are the Belgian Defense Cadets. They are not overweight.

*shrugs*
Most people, with varying degrees of tact, told me I was too heavy to attempt a full marathon. Finished it anyway.
They CAN march so why not?

Well most of these guys aren't much heavier than I am, I march with a Sousaphone in a Fire Department Band all summer long, followed by playing for an hour standing up in the beer tent. Never had a problem finishing a parade or playing after the parade.

I'm sorry to hear about your brother-in-law, bloke - seventy is too young.

...so - instead of just emphysema, lung cancer, and heart disease, people are now dying of emphysema, lung cancer, heart disease, broken hips, diabetes, (oh) and (via the THC) epic stupidity.
THC is somewhat addictive, but not nearly as much as is sugar, which has been shown to affect the same receptors in the body as does cocaine:

Here, in PRNY (the People's Republic of New York), posession of marijuana (in small amounts) has just been decriminalized.

This. ^bloke wrote:My brother-in-law (a defensive lineman in college who - at one time...probably twenty years ago - weighed over 500 lbs.) died yesterday morning at age 70 of a heart attack.
Most all of his health problems (which began in his 50's, and snowballed over the last decade) were directly related to morbid obesity.
Recently, I've dropped about 55 lbs. (and counting). My bp (no meds) is down to around 100/60, and my heart rate (at rest) is about 55 bpm. (I've not run the first ten feet, nor done the first push-up, nor done the first sit-up.) On hot days - when outdoors working - I'm no longer sweating out my clothing in the first few minutes of working, and I'm able to walk into any store and (simply) buy a pair of slacks or jeans - somewhere towards the middle of the available size ranges, and with "regular" (not "relaxed") cut.
Carrying around less weight - for the vast majority of people - is a decision, promotes better health, and (surely) less effort ends up being involved in most any physical endeavor - including playing an instrument, and marching while playing an instrument. Most any physical activity ends up being accomplished with more grace when it is not a struggle to carry out that activity.

Re: Overweight and marching
Doesn't it, though?! You can get some pretty high ABV with like Impy stouts and Wee Heavy's, but a regular drinking beer - can you imagine a 10% ABV lager? I would go insane!Three Valves wrote:What this country needs is a good 7% ABV beer!!Big Toot wrote:

Re: Overweight and marching
IPAs on the shelf here are routinely 7%. Certainly not all, but it's there for those who want it. Tripels and scotch ales at 8 or 9%. I've seen 10%, but it wasn't lager - suspect that isn't possible. In the Pacific NW, we apparently decided, it wasn't the water, after all.

Snake Dog is my go-to 7% but I want something that drinks like a session IPA and hits like full strength!!

Re: Overweight and marching
I am not a fan of IPAs, frankly. My favourite beers are simple - pilsners, lagers, dunkels. Beers that follow the Reinheitsgebot are even better, IMO.

Hopped up lagers and Pilsners are great, I like the Fresh Cut from Peak.
But it doesn’t even top 5%

Re: Overweight and marching
Lagunitas Pils is 6%. Maybe west coast only, but it's distributed outside California for sure. Had some this evening, not bad for a Pilsener, but I'm not a good judge of that kind of thing.

Available for many years now: Boulevard Tank 7. Actually, a little higher @ 8.3 ABV, but with moderate hoppiness and a "93" rating from Beer Advocate. I enjoy it on occasion myself.Three Valves wrote:What this country needs is a good 7% ABV beer!!Big Toot wrote:

The belly is obviously part of the uniform. Looks like some of them forgot that part, the way some of my students used to forget to bring the correct color socks to marching contest.
