Visiting New Orleans

We are going to be in New Orleans for a couple of days in a few weeks. Where do the locals go for good food that won't break the bank? And how about a place to hear some good jazz that doesn't involve Bourbon Street?

My favourite place there is called Coop's Place. Amazing food. Reasonable prices.
As for jazz, I always visit the Preservation Hall, but I'm a sucker for them.

You might check the "Spotted Cat" calendar for the time you're there. Panorama Jazz Band appears to have a regular Saturday evening spot, and in general their acts seem to be somewhat in that vein. If you like that kind of thing. (I do.)

It's a tie between Coop's Place and the Oceana Grill for my favorite eats in New Orleans...

Jazz in NOLA, now, is about like barbecue in Memphis; the good stuff is way off the beaten path, and you have to know who to ask.

That's exactly how it was when I visited in May. It seemed that 95% of the clubs I walked past just had DJs playing light rock and country music. I imagine the old-timers in town just shake their heads and grimace when they consider the club scene nowadays.
