Wouldn't go near there, even if you paid me.
(Actually, I had a standing NYE gig at a prominent shuttered-many-years-ago restaurant two blocks from there, back in the "bad old days" (?).....it was a logistical nightmare even then, long before the days of security screening and "heightened awareness").

I lived in NYC for 8 years. My wife and I went once, just to say we did it.
Really wasn't a big deal. I think we got there around 9pm, 50-something-th street... Could barely see the ball (whatever) and couldn't hear or understand anything other than being in a very tightly contained crowd.
Bought a few pints of whiskey on the way, drank them in the crowd, and then went home (that place promptly clears at 12:01, and by about 12:10, it's as weird as midtown usually is at midnight).
Nothing spectacular, good or bad.
Usual NYC rules apply:
Pee before you go
Don't drink water based things, liquor only
Expect it to smell like pee
Expect to wait in a crowd
Expect people not from NY to be moderately interested in it.
I wouldn't do it again, but wouldn't stop people either.
Besides, Joe... Times Square (even the "good" version now) smells like pee already.
Sidebar: my wife worked in a building on the 50th floor, looking down at the ball that they drop for New year's. The real entertainment was to go up there a few days before and watch them set it up and all that stuff. Pretty neat.
BTW, why is New Year's even a holiday. My kids keep asking me, and I have no idea. They ask what we're supposed to do to celebrate. Uh... Go sledding? Sleep in? I honestly have no idea, and never have.

Like all of us, in my youth I could hold it way longer. NYC is a notoriously bad place to find a place to relieve yourself, especially at such crowded events. Why not take the astronaut approach and wear some Depends so you can pee your pants rather than dying of discomfort. Just saying....

Just be happy that you guys have a surreptitious way to pee, which I don't. I think that underwear for bladder problems would be the most appropriate in that situation.

To pee, or not to pee: that is the question.
