For the repair techs, custom modifiers and amateur DIYer's. What's your favorite gas, torch tip and solder? Which are best for small parts? Which are best for large parts?
Gas - Oxy/acetylene, Mapp gas, propane?
Torch tip - 0, 1, 2 rosebud ...?
Solder - 0, 5, 15, 50/50 ...?

It's low tech but a hand held butane torch works well for my level of repairs.

I use a propane/MAPP handheld canister torch with an auto-igniter for most things. I have a small butane torch, but hardly ever use it. I prefer to use Propane in it. I only like MAPP for annealing, as it gets crazy hot.

Gas grill propane tank with a pencil torch tip and 50/50 solder
My favorite is natural gas with a #1 tip for soft soldering and a #2 tip for silver soldering, but natural gas is not an option for my current shop.

From a soldering clinic I've given. As you can see, 63/37 offers the best shot of not burning lacquer.

I use 63/37 for and an air/acetylene 'Presto-Lite' torch for most repairs. I also have an oxy/acetylene setup for silver-soldering and brazing.

I have worked on electronics and made a living doing air conditioning and refrigeration. I have used cheap radio shack solder up to expensive silver solder. I didn't realize I was so limited in my solder knowledge. I had no idea that 63/37 was made let alone an option. Nice to get this info from you guys. I have an old Buescher Eb 3v that I am going to experiment on. thanks again. Mitch
