Happy Birthday to your wife!
Is her gift a tear down and rebuild of one of her horns? (It's a joke!)

Looking good! Now you've got me considering taking the silver off of my next project horn...

Would bead blasting the inside so it is an even satin improve the looks? No metal removed that way...the elephant wrote:However, as I stated above I do not want to risk doing both sides, so the inside will remain silver, sort of like a Conn 2J where the inside of the bell has to be polished and is all spotty and gross-looking, heh, heh...

Ah. So that won't work. Good to know. Thanks.bloke wrote:I've bead-blasted some heavily-silver-plated 1950's and 1960's vintage tuba bells. The Big Ben wrote:Would bead blasting the inside so it is an even satin improve the looks? No metal removed that way...
Depending on how early or late in the 1960's these were made, some of them featured VERY THICK (borderline "clad") silver plating. There is a considerable risk - when bead-blasting silver plating - of the silver plating coming off in "sheets", leaving a completely-stripped area right next to an area where considerably thick silver plating remains...

I'd prefer a two-tone bell over that ring, any day.

Re: Holton 345 Redux
The one thing that would bug me about it is that it goes right over the engraving
If it were anyplace else, (I regularly play detachable bell horns, so it's not a game changer for me) I might be able to learn to live with it.

1. I'm an oddball fan of two-tone bells
2. Solder the cut ring below the engraving and stick to the tone-ring story.

Damn! It's barely half of a tuba in that photo, and I love it.
