Low D1 on 3 valve BBb modification?

Hello,

For my marching show this year we have a D1 written which isn't really playable on BBb with 3 valves. Currently, I'm playing it as a "false tone" with second valve, but it's not a resonant as I would like. In this show, we use the third valve only about once and I was wondering how I would go about making a really long third valve slide to be able to play the D1. We play on a Yamaha YBB202M.

I agree. That would be a lot of modification for one song of one show. This is a wonderful opportunity to work on your false tones. It will benefit you later on!

You could probably rig up the proper length of aquarium tubing/hose that could be quickly swapped for the third valve slide before and after that tune. No messy or expensive modifications...

Thanks for the feedback! I think for now I'll keep playing the false tone, but maybe I'll play around with some aquarium tubing for fun. Definitely could turn out to be interesting.

Am I the only one that thinks that anybody that writes a non optional low D in a marching band score deserves public scorn?

Indeed. Even then, my high school band director rarely, if ever, had us play anything below open BBb on the field or on the street, because, simply, it would not carry and took too much air for the typical high school souzy player.

OTOH, if a person is playing, say, a Conn 38K, 20K, or similar, with the right mouthpiece and embouchure conditioning, the privileged tone of D1 - 2nd valve, should be smooth enough that the transition over the break should not be noticeable.

On my 38K with a very long pull on the second valve installed by Dan Schulz I can lip down to a pedal D0 using 123 - and it is fairly robust. The 2nd valve D1 sounds almost as good as the 234 one on my 716 York and is easier to play.
