Hello Tubenet,
I have an extra valve set that are a hair (1-2 mm) too thick to fit in my valve casings. Is this an easy fix? Can they just be "turned down" or have a layer of metal taken off? What is involved with this process?

I'm trying to decide whether to keep these non fitting valves or return them.

Anyone in the know feel free to reply.

I probably over estimated how much larger the valves’ diameter is. I’ll pick up or borrow some calipers and post pictures with it.

Couldn’t figure out the picture situation so here are the measurements. I used Husky digital calipers from Home Cheapo.

The original valves outer diameter are 1.106 inches, new valves outer diameter are 1.129 inches.

Inner diameter for casings was hard to get an accurate reading but i kept getting 1.106 inches with others between.

So by my calculations, .023 is the difference, which means I need .0115 of material taken/lapped off the outside of the new valves to make them fit. Is that do-able?

Inside measurement of the casings would be best, but if your current pistons are not worn and leaky, an accurate measurement of them will give you a "close ballpark" figure, and will give you a relative measurement between the old and new pistons. If the measurement between the two is dramatic (or not), you'll have your answer without having to go any further (O.D. is generally easier to get an accurate measurement than I.D., at least in my experience )

At the risk of being redundant, most calipers I've seen have the ability to measure both outside and inside diameters.




The elephant is correct. We are talking about tolerances that are so small, that precision is a must.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I did buy a cheap set of calipers and I did both inner and outer diameter as stated above. Inner diameter seemed like I may have been at a bit of an angle, making the measurement off, however, it matched the valve’s outer diameter.

With the large difference I decided to send the valves back anyway.

I was trying to do MAW valves on the cheap but I’ll have to bite the bullet and get a legit MAW set. I’m pretty sure the stock ones won’t fit so i’ll need to figure it a way to get them custom measured and made by MAW.
