Doesn't that make the leadpipe (I think what you meant instead of "mouthpipe") really vulnerable then?

Hmmm. When I make a leadpipe, after it's bent with lead inside, I figure it's work-hardened (like I'd like it to be, thus not vulnerable to denting, etc.) and I'll melt the lead out, making sure I don't get up to annealing temp.
