Looking for a 4/4 CC Tuba

Post by ai698 »

For my playing needs in a few of my ensembles, I'm looking for a smaller 4/4 5v CC tuba (not a Miraphone 186, just sold one). I just got my bonus for reenlisting in the National Guard and have some $$ (but not too much) to get another tuba along with french horn for my son (currently at Jim Patterson's getting some magic done to it).

Here's some tubas I'm looking at-
Meinl Weston 2145
MW 37
PT 3P (piston)
PT 4 (rotor)
PT 20P (piston)
Miraphone 188 (I know, not small but like how they play)
Conn 52J (not in silver, hate polishing)

I could even consider a MW 45SLP F if the price is right.

4/4 CC

I have a Yamaha 661 5 rotor CC lacquer in great shape. A few scratches inside the bell. Just had a few small dents removed. The 5th valve is in the left hand. It is a little horn that takes no prisoners. The scale and response are excellent. Low register is very impressive. PM me if you are interested.

I'm looking at that one, but I'm hoping I can find something a little lower. By the end of the summer, I might be able to afford that one.

I have a Conn 3J, CC, 4 valves, in excellent condition.
Denver area, asking $2400.
It is silver, however, but at that price you can afford to pay someone to polish it for you a few times a year!
Do some research, these are very highly regarded by many.
Some people call it a 3/4, some say 4/4,
Personally I think it is too large to fit into the 3/4 category....

Add Miraphone 181 and 281 F to my list. I'm probably going to sell my Meinl Weston 46 F at a great price if I can find one of these tubas on my list.

Check out the Yamaha 861 that is for sale down the page. They were all great horns and this, by all accounts, is a fantastic instrument. I would be looking myself, but I just bought a 2155R prototype that will not be leaving my clutches for quite a loooong time.

Did you see the "new version" 184-5U CC at Bassclefbrass? It's a little smaller than what you've listed, but I see these getting nice reviews.

FYI,

Yep, played one. I'll pass. If it was a 188...
