WTB: Small to Medium bass horn for college

Postby jorgeskid » Fri May 04, 2012 11:17 pm

I'm packing up and heading off to college, and my new professor has told me he wants me on a bass horn. I'm looking for something similar to the besson 983 or yamaha 621. He said it has to be front action, and that's really the only requirement. It'll be used mostly for chamber playing and solos.

The one catch is that I need to be able to make payments on it. Money is super tight(of course) and there's just no way I can come up with all of it at once before this fall. If you'd like to help me out, please let me know.

Thanks!
Ben

While it would be the most beneficial to get used to your incoming F/Eb over the summer, it seems you might not have enough $$$ for the horn that YOU want.

What is the horn YOU want? How many F/Eb's have YOU played on? Don't settle for a horn YOU don't really want, but bought because you HAD to get something. Don't rush this!!!

Working and saving during summer (along with the $$$ you already have), will bring you closer to your goal of getting the horn YOU want.

Regardless, you will have auditions for band/orch probably in late August at your new school, and that's about the time student loans are mailed (use sparingly)...

Practice the audition music, use your current horn, and and play your best. Then, after the dust settles, take your $$$ and get the horn YOU want.

Think long term.

Not mine. Just connecting the dots. It's not similar to the instruments you mention. But it is an affordable front action bass tuba.

I'd consider the 2145 to be a CONTRABASS tuba. The OP is looking for a BASS tuba.

Actually, the 2145 is a medium sized 4/4 horn. It set well with small ensembles such as quartets and served well as a solo instrument.

Eb, F => Bass tuba
BBb, CC => Contrabass tuba

This BassHorn term is confusing.

I'm curious, why did the professor stipulate that it has to be front action? Not trying to criticize or troll, I'm honestly interested to know the reasoning behind that spec.
