I think you might have to be beyond lucky to find the cheap mail-order sousaphone, if only because they're hard to put in the mail. (I'm including this "wanted" initiative in that category since you didn't reveal your location.)

If your area has any repair shops that work on school instruments, make friends with them. Find out about school auctions, other band programs (I bought an Eb from the local office of the Salvation Army, which I wouldn't have guessed still existed.)

You're dealing with a bunch of guys here who are mostly quite a bit older than you, and smarter, to judge by your writing skills; something to bear in mind. My suggestion would be to roll with it. You're going to run into the same thing at the repair shops, older guys who don't owe you anything.

300? Still better off finding one of those cheap fiberglass sousaphones that usually start for $0.99.

Why limit yourself to a sousaphone you may get a recording bell bb tuba for that money quicker or an upright bell I see them a lot on eBay
Cant carry a tune but I can carry a Tuba

I would suggest looking at this site
http://www.wichitaband.com/used2.html" target="_blank

I have not delt with this instrument shop in the past. I just happen to stumble upon it in my search for tubas. If you scroll to the botton you will see sousaphones for 1,470.00 is the cheapest I saw. You might be able to talk them down. I would be very cautious with ebay, just too much risk involved in my opinion.

I hope this helps.
